SIAT Makes Significant Progress in Research on Environmental Pollutants Disrupting the Brain–Testis Axis and Male Fertility.
The Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT), Chinese Academy of Sciences, has recently made important progress in studying how environmental pollutants impair male fertility via disruption of the brain–testis axis. This achievement was made under the framework of the ANSO Joint Research Collaboration Project “Impact of Microplastic Pollution on Brain and Reproductive Health and Disruption of Organ Barrier Functions” (Project No. ANSO-CR-KP-2021-12), led by Dr. Lei Li.
The research team discovered that exposure to perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), a typical organic pollutant, alters hypothalamic metabolism and adversely affects male reproductive capacity. The study, titled “Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid exposure altered hypothalamic metabolism and disturbed male fecundity”, was published online on June 23, 2022, in the leading environmental science journal Science of the Total Environment. The print publication date was October 20, 2022.
